An Alaskan cruise offers the opportunity to see magnificent glaciers before they melt away and incredible wildlife in its natural habitat. Unlike cruises in the warmer climes, for most tourists the best part of an Alaskan cruise takes place off the boat rather on the boat. If you don’t pack smartly, however, you may not be able to enjoy all the benefits of cruise into America’s last great natural frontier.

Binoculars

From the vantage point of both on board the ship and on the land, you will kick yourself if you don’t pack a nice pair of binoculars. Moose, bears, great birds, and whales are regularly going to be making their into your line of vision, but in many cases will be too far away to enjoy unless you can bring them closer with binoculars.

Waterproof Jacket

Even during the height of summer, the cool mist and spray of the water can have a dampening effect upon your mood. The cooler the period you take your Alaskan cruise, the colder and wetter you may wind up getting. It’s pretty hard to enjoy the majesty of this amazing state when you busy shivering and trying to keep dry so pack a nice windbreaker that repels the water from below and above.

Sunglasses

Alaska may be the land of the midnight sun, but on your cruise you can trust that the sun will be reflecting off glaciers and snow and right back into your eyes. If you wear sunglasses to the beach because of the glare from the sun’s reflection off the sand, you’ll have a fairly good idea of what the sun can be like in Alaska.

Insect Repellent

Inside the cozy confines of your ship’s cabin, you should be well protected from the bugs that make the great outdoors their home. As soon as you go topside or head inland, however, all bets are off. It may get cold in Alaska, but one visit there will relieve you of the myth that mosquitoes can’t exist in non-humid areas. At last count there were at least 35 species of mosquito in Alaska and human blood is at the top of the menu.

Extra Digital Camera Memory Cards

No matter how prepared you think you are, you will take more pictures on an Alaskan cruise that you think. For this reason, it really behooves you to bring along a few extra memory cards on which you can stores pictures. It’s not that you can’t find places to buy memory cards, but you don’t want to find yourself in a position to take that amazing once in a lifetime photo only to find that your memory card is full.
